David Pollak covers the Sharks for the Mercury News and is typically an enjoyable read.
In his latest blog, Pollak talks about Clowe’s return (possibly skating with the fourth line) and Brad Stuart facing his former team tonight in Detroit. He includes his interview with Stuart towards the middle of the story, if you’re interested in learning more about the old defender.
As far as Clowe bring removed from his Top Six role, it’s difficult to argue with Todd McLellan on this one. The 30-year old winger is currently 4th in the league in time spent in the penalty box and has yet to find the back of the net this year.
It would be easier for McLellan to ignore the penalty minutes if they served a purpose, but as he presses to score his first goal of the 2013 season, many of his minutes have been due to emotional outbursts – something the Sharks simply cannot afford at this point in the season.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love the intensity Clowe brings, and there’s no doubt the Sharks are a better team with him on the ice. In fact, I truly believe that once he gets going offensively, we’ll see his PIM decrease drastically. But until then, look for Clowe to be joining the likes of Michal Handzus, Tim Kennedy and James Sheppard.
